Clouds are classified according to their height above and appearance (texture) from the ground.
The following cloud roots and translations summarize the components of this classification system:
- Cirro : curl of hair, high.
- Strato : layer.
- Cumulo : heap.
- Alto : mid.
- Nimbo : rain, precipitation.
